You can display product search results with different template.
1) Login the Admin Panel
2) Go to Theme-Layout -> Theme and Layouts. Open the design window for the active theme.
3) Select the radio button on "Product Search Page" in the middle column.
4) Add one of the templates from the "Add Content" drop down list.
Important, do NOT add more than one template into the product search result page.
The templates are:
Search Product Results Text Only
Search Product Results with Thumbnails x 1
Search Product Results with Thumbnails x 2
Search Product Results with Thumbnails x 3
Search Product Results with Thumbnails x 4
Available from version 3.0
